Guided Fly Fishing Trips - Stillwater River
The
Stillwater River is one of Montana's most beautiful and un crowded
fisheries. This beautiful river begins in the Absaroka-Beartooth
Wilderness and flows north toward the town of Columbus, Montana.
This fast flowing river isn't anything like it's given name. Just
like the river the trout in this stream are healthy and strong fighters.
Typically fishing this stream starts by mid July and August from
rafts, but good wade fishing can also be had in the early spring
with very good mayfly hatches starting around early March.
On average, rainbows and browns range from 10-16", though fish
up to 20" are routinely caught. This is definitely a dry fly
fishing river and fishing this pocket water stream with a big hopper
or stonefly pattern can be awesome. While this is primarily a pocket
water fishery - which lends itself to attractor flies - there are
very consistent hatches of March Browns, Baetis (Blue winged olives),
Golden Stones, Yellow Sally's and numerous caddis hatches. The fall
brings larger Brown trout up to spawn from the Yellowstone River
- this is the time of year where streamer fishing can bring up one
of the bigger trout.
