When is the Best Time to Fish the Yellowstone?

SPRING
  • Pre-Runoff (March – Early May) Excellent fishing, fewer crowds. March Browns, Baetis (BWO), Mother’s Day Caddis. Great nymphing and early dry fly opportunities.
  • Runoff (Early  May – Mid June) Fishing not recommended due to high, muddy water. Runoff is unpredictable and there are other options, so please contact us.
SUMMER
  • Post-Runoff (Late June – Early September) Peak season! Dry fly fishing is spectacular. Salmonflies, Golden Stones, Green Drakes, PMDs, Caddis, Yellow Sallies. Terrestrial fishing (Hoppers, Ants) in late summer.
FALL
  • Late season (Mid September – October) Consistently good fishing for trophy trout. Drakes, Baetis, Midges, and Pseudocloeon. Streamer fishing for aggressive Brown trout is highly effective.

Where do you Fish the Yellowstone River?

Our guides specialize in all three distinct areas of this magnificent river:

  • Upper River: Runs from the Yellowstone National Park boundary to below Yankee Jim Canyon. Known for fast-moving, challenging water and spectacular mountain views.
  • Paradise Valley: The iconic central section from Point of Rocks access point to Livingston. This is where the river meanders through the stunning valley floor, offering diverse water types.
  • Lower Stretch: From Livingston down past the town of Big Timber. Often overlooked, this section can produce some of the largest Brown trout, especially later in the season.
